If the diode has a triangle with a line across the point, put the wide end of the triangle to the solar cell on the positive wire. If the diode just has a line across one end, put that line away from the solar cell.

Question by Dancer: How is energy from solar panels converted to energy that can be used for solar power?
I want to do a science project where I create my own solar panels out of different materials to see which one will produce the greatest amount of energy. Is this a realistic topic if it has to be done before Thanksgiving? If so, how do I make the solar panels? How do I measure/convert the energy? Please help!

You might be able to manage solar panels to warm water.
This would be used, for example, in a home to reduce energy needed by the hot water heater.

Other types of solar panels, such as those that make electricity, you would not be able to make at home.

There are several types of solar panels. If you mean photovoltaic panels for generating electricity, that is a really advanced project that few amateurs are equipped to do. In the long run, it will be a lot cheaper and easier to buy factory made PV panels.

You can try building one by sandwiching an array of photovoltaic cells between a sheet of glass or plexiglass and a sheet of aluminum. Remember that this assembly must be able to withstand great heat, and it must be sealed to make absolutely sure it does not leak.

So basically, you need to lay out the PV cells and wire them together to get the desired voltage and current, with some arrangement to allow the wires to extend outside without leaking. Then you enclose the panel around all four edges with aluminum channel and seal with silicone sealer. Lay it on thick and test thoroughly with water hoses to eliminate all leaks.

As mentioned, it’s easier and cheaper to buy them factory made.

If you mean a heat collector for a solar house heating system or hot water system, that is just a matter of building a thin, flat aluminum box with a glass lid. For hot air, you just need to circulate the air through the box when the sun is shining. For water, you need to have some arrangement to pass the water through the compartment in thin walled metal tubing. You won’t be surprised when I say it’s cheaper to buy one factory made.

Question by spoil9: If I add 4 large 12V computer fans to my roof vent and power them by a solar panel, will it make a difference?
i would like to construct 4x 12VDC computer fans under my roof vent. These would be wired in parallel to a 12V solar panel (Wattage depending on size of fans). I know this would only work during the day, but that’s really all I need. My question is, would this make a difference in the temp in the attic or am I wasting my time. Really, I don’t want to spend 0 of a pre-made kit and have to replace the vent.

Is there companies that sell complete solar kits (solar panels, inverters, regulators etc) but excluding the batteries and excluding installation?
The inverter needs to provide 220V and not 110V (or both) and the company needs to be willing to export.
The inverter needs to be between 5000kva and 7000kva and I need between 2000W and 3000W worth of solar panels.

I get the part of the solar panel, but the wiring of components gets me down. I don’t want an independent circuit, i want the energy to go directly into the house to save on energy.
I want to know what component/s to use and how it works, because i don’t want to be completely clueless. I have been in an electrical course so i understand well, but my memory is not at is best.

i ask this question because the parts are all there to buy, but most don’t explain what they do or how they do it. I want to be able to make an educated dessication on what to use.

By your question, I would HIGHLY recommend you hire a contractor well versed in solar power systems. If not done correctly, you WILL BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN – GUARANTEED! Your power company must also get involved. They don’t want their employees getting electrocuted by back fed power from your home to the grid. That would really fry their a$$.

If your power isn’t synchronized with the grid power, you WILL DESTROY YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM – GUARANTEED.

You can’t just simply plug in a power generating system, solar or gasoline powered generator, and expect to save money. It doesn’ t work that way.

Google “Solar power systems for your home” and you’ll see what is involved. Not for the layman homeowner.
